  • A large crowd gathered at 104 Murray Ave. for the grand reopening of YMCA Fuller Family Park after a $2.6 million renovation added a splashpad, playground, multipurpose court, walkway and amphitheater for local kids—city officials and donors expressed pride in the upgrade.  Telegram & Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The City of Worcester added color to town by installing 37 utility boxes with miniature murals from local artists through its WooBox public art project; each box features a QR code that shows art details and a map while funding and weather delays pushed installations to spring. Officials reported vandalism — with three wraps already replaced — and say a second art call will be planned for late 2025 or early 2026 to add more designs.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Worcester resident Michelle Sloan went to collect her lottery prize today and discovered her winning ticket from Village Knoll Variety had a $1 million prize rather than the $10,000 she expected—she opted for a one-time cash payment of $650,000 before taxes and plans to support her children and invest.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WPI students have worked with local municipalities to tackle water resource challenges in Central Massachusetts—helping towns study stormwater funding and improve management. The program, run by Corey Dehner and Paul Mathisen, earned an Educators Award from MassDEP and gave students valuable real-world experience.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WPI researchers led by Professor Yan Wang developed a new recycling process for lithium-ion batteries that recovers over 92% of nickel, cobalt, and manganese from spent Ni-lean cathodes and uses 8.6% less energy—tests show batteries made with this recycled material keep 88% of their capacity after 500 charge cycles and over 85% after 900 cycles. The breakthrough was published in Energy Storage Materials and offers a more sustainable way to reduce battery waste while cutting carbon emissions by 13.9%.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

  • At Radio Worcester, local leaders discussed the city’s possible move to operate a supermarket to improve food access—while also addressing a cancelled Latin American Festival and proposed changes in the petition process. They said details of the proposals and next steps are still under review.  Radio Worcester
  • Today, Mayor Joe Petty spoke on Radio Worcester about housing and a plan to change the petition process so that councilors will manage them—he said this change will help focus City Council meetings. He also said he hopes to bring back the canceled Latin American Festival to create a more positive community event.  Radio Worcester

  • At Seven Saws Brewery in Holden, more than forty kids participated in the Kids Ruck Challenge on July 17 to raise over $40,000 for Why Me? and Sherry's House—organizations that support families facing childhood cancer.  Spectrum News 1
  • Massachusetts is urging the federal government to create a national mesothelioma registry to help veterans exposed to asbestos in shipyards, military sites, and industrial areas. The registry will collect data to improve early detection and treatment—helping doctors catch the disease before it grows too advanced.  This Week in Worcester
