COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Whitin Community Center began converting a historic school building at 14 Hill St. in Northbridge into a child care center after a groundbreaking ceremony on Feb. 19 (part of a $10M capital campaign for its centennial), aiming to boost services for families already served by its 237-child program.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Downtown Worcester BID invites local vendors to participate in the 10-week 'Out to Lunch' summer program on the Worcester Common Oval running Wednesdays from June 24 to August 26. Applications from food trucks, restaurants, and artisans are due by Tuesday, March 31.  Radio Worcester

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester will debut 20 electric school buses next week using $5.4 million in federal funding. The buses, serving schools near the district’s bus yard at 115 Northeast Cutoff, will run simpler routes and follow extra safety measures (like air brake signals for quiet pickups).  Telegram & Gazette
  • Worcester Public Schools are considering reducing the busing eligibility radius from 2 miles to 1.5 miles to ease traffic around Roosevelt Elementary and other busy areas. The proposal, discussed on Feb. 26 by school officials (including transportation director Mike Freeman), may require additional buses and drivers.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senators approved a borrowing bill that will let public higher education campuses invest up to $3.28 billion for deferred maintenance and upgrades, with $2.5 billion dedicated to capital projects at community colleges, state universities and UMass campuses. Lawmakers plan to negotiate a single version before sending it to the governor.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Crews have been trucking snow from city streets to a designated storage area off Goddard Memorial Drive following heavy snowfall on Feb. 22-23. As temperatures hit the mid-40s today, the Department of Public Works will assess whether to continue removal operations.  Telegram & Gazette

  • UMass Chan research led by Job Dekker is competing in STAT Madness (a bracket-style contest where public voting begins March 2) to choose the top study on the 4D nucleome published Dec. 15 in Nature, which will narrow the field from 64 to 32 entries.  UMass Chan Medical School

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • MassDevelopment has named Sandi Wolchansky Silk as its new executive vice president of real estate, replacing Tania Hartford. The agency, known for supporting projects like the Worcester Housing Authority’s Lakeside Apartment overhaul, announced her hiring through a Feb. 18 press release.  Worcester Business Journal
