  • Kelley Square Pizza in Worcester is offering a large cheese pizza for $11.80 in December when customers use the code 'Home Alone'—a nod to the price Kevin McCallister paid in the 1990 film. The pizza normally costs $14.95 based on the menu.  This Week In Worcester
  • The building housing longtime McGovern’s Greendale Liquor and Package Store, founded by the father of Rep. Jim McGovern, was sold for $1.03M on November 13th at 440-444 West Boylston St and was purchased by the 444 West Boylston Street Trust.  Worcester Business Journal

  • The Better Business Bureau warns that scammers are targeting holiday shoppers, job-seekers, and donors with free gift card offers, fake jobs, impostor retail sites, and bogus charities, urging residents to verify details before sharing personal information—more tips will be shared soon.  Radio Worcester

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hanover Theatre is getting a makeover for its annual production of A Christmas Carol, which will run from December 17 to 28 with new music, sets, lighting and choreography. Director Troy Siebels said the show will give the classic tale a fresh look for the holiday season.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Local rockers the Silverbacks, known as the Delta Force of Rock 'n' Roll, are set to perform at White Eagle at 118 Green St. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m.—the concert will feature seasoned local musicians with a high-energy performance and $10 admission.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Luis Pedraja, President of Quinsigamond Community College, said QCC is hosting its annual Stuff a Cruiser toy drive and Fourth Annual Holiday Market to support students and families during the holiday season. He noted that 773 students have used the Home Plate Food Pantry since July—and the college is offering emergency aid to help cover unexpected costs.  Radio Worcester
  • WSU professor Megan Connerly published her new children's book Rescued: Watson’s Story which uses a rescue dog's journey to help children understand their feelings. She created it after teachers requested more social-emotional learning tools—her own loss of Watson is honored in an addendum while a follow-up on grief and healing will be released next October.  Worcester State University
  • Students at five Central Massachusetts colleges now have access to $25M for behavioral health education through the Behavioral Health Workforce Scholarship Program—offering up to $12,500 per academic year in scholarships and unpaid internships while requiring a two-year work commitment in the state—with eligible schools including Anna Maria College in Paxton, Assumption University, Fitchburg State, Framingham State and Worcester State; applications are due by Jan 20.  Worcester Business Journal
  • WPI named Brittany Frederick as its new director of multicultural education and community engagement last winter to help students feel welcome and supported.   • Worcester will hold a five-minute ceremony at Franklin Street Fire Station at 6 p.m. today to mark 26 years since the Cold Storage Warehouse fire that claimed six firefighters’ lives—organizers say two additional ceremonies later this month will honor other fallen firefighters—reminding locals of their sacrifice.  MassLive
  • Massachusetts does not require a statewide snow removal rule so local cities set their own, and in Worcester residents must clear a four-foot wide path on the sidewalk within 10 hours after snow stops falling or risk fines.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • WPI researcher Jeffrey Bourgeois received a $542,500 award to study how human genes affect the inflammatory response to Lyme disease bacteria as part of the Tick-Borne Disease Research Program—his work is supported by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
