COMMUNITY NEWS

  • T&G Santa purchased toys for nearly 8,000 children in need using donations from readers, local businesses & civic organizations on Dec. 1. The United Way of Central Massachusetts partnered in the effort as the fund’s daily total reached $400 and the running total was $25,618.  Telegram & Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Plain View Farm in Hubbardston was founded in 2010 by Keith Tetreault and his wife Debbie—who raise alpacas and llamas on a six-acre farm where they also educate the public and produce related items.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Publisher Peter Stanton (after 46 years in publishing) will retire at the end of January, marking a change at WBJ. Tom Curtin (a longtime publishing executive) will take over as CEO and publisher in February to sustain the local news service.  Worcester Business Journal
  • A downtown Worcester coffee shop has rebranded as Garden Coffee & Cocktails and will stay open until midnight on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The business, formerly known as Brew on the Grid and Brew Café, continues to serve coffee daily beginning at 7 a.m.  MassLive
  • UniBank is marking its Polar Park branch's one-year anniversary by offering regular grade gas for 10 cents a gallon from 7 to 10 a.m. on Dec. 4 at Chop Chop Convenience Gulf Station on Madison St (with a 30-gallon limit per customer).  Telegram & Gazette

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Worcester Festival of Lights will kick off on Dec. 5 from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Worcester Common—this winter event will offer ice skating, food vendors and live shows by local headliners Ricky Duran and Blue Light Bandits. Unique light installations like Kinetic Perspective and an inflatable snow globe will be showcased—free parking at the Pearl-Elm Garage begins at 2 p.m.  MassLive
  • 12-year-old actor Angelo Gray made his big screen debut in The Running Man while filming in London (he played Stacey) and hinted at another movie featuring Mark Wahlberg (a popular local actor).  Spectrum News 1
  • Old Sturbridge Village will host Christmas by Candlelight on Dec. 5-7, Dec. 12-14, Dec. 19-21, and Dec. 26-28 from 2 to 8 p.m. to celebrate holiday traditions in its historic setting (visitors can meet Santa, ride a horse-drawn wagon, and see over 100 trees lit with festive string lights).  Telegram & Gazette

  • Worcester Regional Airport announced in November its boosted incentive program to attract new airlines — those that begin servicing ORH can receive up to $250,000 and have fees waived for two years.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Working as a single mother, Jennifer Hernandez found confidence when a flexible online public speaking course at Quinsigamond Community College helped her overcome her fear—she now leads GEM Marketing Solutions and serves on the college’s foundation board to support future adult learners.  Worcester Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • In September 2023, Worcester City Council approved specialized stretch codes for new buildings aimed at reaching net-zero emissions—this move advances the city’s goal of becoming the greenest midsized city despite business and political pressure.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Worcester is bracing for up to 8 inches of snow today as the Department of Public Works has set its plan in motion with 20 salt spreaders and more than 200 plows, Commissioner John Westerling said. The department has revised its procedures and added new equipment — a move aimed at improving snow removal and road safety after past challenges.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • WBJ named Dr. Crista Johnson-Agbakwu of UMass Memorial Health and UMass Chan Medical School as Physician of the Year on Dec. 1—she has worked to boost health equity for Black mothers.
