COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Worcester County Sheriff's Office—and the Reserve Deputy Sheriff's Association—launched their winter coat drive on Thursday and plan to distribute 4,000 coats to local service organizations and people in need to keep the community warm this winter.  7 News Boston
  • The Worcester Red Sox and WooSox Foundation will launch holiday events including a coat and food drive, a veterans’ dinner, and the WooSox Honors Gala on December 6—where community leaders will be celebrated and players will appear. A new winter festival, Winter in WooVille, will turn Polar Park into a holiday market with a Charity Tree Village—offering a $5,000 prize for the best-decorated tree.  Radio Worcester

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Birch Tree Bread in Worcester now opens at 8:00 a.m. on weekdays and offers expanded catering, Thanksgiving pre-orders, and private event options. Owner Alexis Kelleher said the bakery is growing in popularity—drawing commuters and remote workers with fresh pastries before the holidays.  Radio Worcester
  • Ryan Kittredge, president of ClearPath Financial Partners, said on Talk of the Commonwealth that Amazon’s layoffs are part of hiring too many workers during the surge of 2021–2022—triggered by low interest rates and government stimulus after the pandemic. He noted that while artificial intelligence affects jobs, the layoffs show how companies are getting back to normal.  Radio Worcester

  • Worcester police are investigating the death of 30-year-old Joanna Brown—a beloved Bean Counter Bakery Cafe employee who went missing on Oct. 31 and was found dead in her car on Monday on Mount Vernon Street—as the bakery, mourning her loss, may adjust its hours.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Film 'Shattered Ice,' which explores the emotional impact of suicide and high school loss, will screen at Worcester Palladium at 7 p.m. on Nov. 12 (tickets cost $20) and will be followed by a panel discussion with local athletes and mental health professionals in partnership with the Worcester Railers.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Journey announced their Final Frontier Tour will stop at the DCU Center on June 6—where the band will perform hits like Don't Stop Believin’ and Faithfully; the tour starts Feb. 28 in Hershey and spans 60 cities.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Worcester venues host a busy week of cultural events—beginning with the Worcester Chamber Music Society's 'The Joy of Youth' concert today at the Unitarian Universalist Church with a pre-concert talk at 7 p.m., then featuring a pipe organ show at the Hanover Theatre, a live performance by Johnny Blue Horn and the Caretakers plus the Warren Miller film 'Sno-Ciety' at Mechanics Hall on November 8, and finishing with the American Patchwork Quartet at Luth Concert Hall and drill rapper G Herbo at the Palladium on November 14.  Telegram & Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • WPI has been awarded $5.2 million by the Commonwealth to lead a project that will build a central Massachusetts BioHub with input from MBI, the City of Worcester, and over 30 regional partners. Over the next three years, the initiative will complete 24 pilot projects — train 500 individuals and create 3,000 jobs.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An 18-month, $100,000 Barr Foundation grant has supported LEI at Worcester State to boost academic achievement and community engagement among local high school students and families through programs like Youth Civics Union and Familias Latinas Activas en Misión de Aprendizaje — the first major support from this foundation — by funding projects including a Youth Participatory Action Research project, dual-enrollment courses, and family workshops that reached over 100 participants.  Worcester State University

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A New Bedform-based development firm bought One Exchange Place in Downtown Worcester for $3.5 million and plans to convert the former Waldo Street Police Station into a mixed use site with a restaurant and 44 apartments. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and redevelopment will begin soon.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Tommy Cassell—local sports writer—has released his predictions for every Week 10 high school football game in Central Mass and Worcester, covering playoff matchups in divisions 1 through 8.   • Freshman quarterback Dom Campanile impressed Holy Cross against Lafayette by completing 17 of 22 passes for 127 yards and one interception when injuries forced him into action.
