  • Today on the Worcester Red Sox Show, Dr. Charles Steinberg discussed Polar Park’s financial issues and stressed the team’s role in boosting civic pride — he also invited feedback on its events.   • The T&G Santa Fund kicks off this month in its 87th year to raise money for toys and books for children in need by teaming up with partners like United Way and Worcester Housing Authority+ among others.   • Worcester’s Theatre Café celebrated 15 years by recalling its unusual debut when police held a stakeout a day before its planned Oct. 28 opening to catch a drug dealer—owners Bill Aldrich and Jeanette Harmsen now serve local detainees, theatergoers and celebrities with a seasonal menu and reservation-only dinners.   • Hayden Wood Insurance Agency in Southborough, known for insuring collector and motorsport vehicles, was acquired by New York-based Marsh McLennan Agency—retaining all employees, including owner Morgan Duffy, in its Southborough office. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 50,000 Worcester SNAP recipients will receive only half of their usual food aid from an emergency fund—judges ordered the government to use funds already set aside and officials await court guidance with payments expected to begin November 5.  Telegram & Gazette

  • After Nashoba Valley shuttered, emergency room visits in Central Massachusetts increased and strained area hospitals. The volume is expected to rise further + a shortage of primary care and planned Medicaid cuts add to the challenge.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Worcester’s chief development officer Peter Dunn explained that many are surprised to learn the city is New England’s second largest because its skyline is low rise—unlike nearby Providence which has many towers.   • Todd Alexander (executive at Kelleher and Sadowsky Associates) has been busy finding retail space for his clients as Worcester properties show near all-time low vacancy rates and second-generation restaurant spaces drive rising demand in Central Mass.  Worcester Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Simone Foreman returned to Holy Cross women's basketball after a PCL tear and played in the season opener at Boston College on Nov. 3, finishing her recovery a month and a half early. She said she is excited to reach her many goals and help her team under coach Candice Green—her strong scoring and rebound skills boosted her stats last season.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Holy Cross men's basketball team opened its season at Providence on November 3 by rallying from a 20-point deficit to within nine with under a minute left but fell to an 89-79 loss (coach Dave Paulsen said the team was proud but not satisfied).
