- ➤ City officials and nonprofit groups in Worcester are ramping up emergency food drives as more than 1 million Massachusetts residents will lose SNAP benefits this weekend, including 53,727 local residents—actions taken amid a government shutdown that has lasted 28 days and raises food security concerns. - ➤ UniBank CEO Michael Welch said on Talk of the Commonwealth that a partnership with Habitat for Humanity helped two local families become homeowners using a lottery system, sweat equity and UniBank mortgages. He explained the program benefits families earning 30–60 percent of the local median income and mentioned a future initiative in late December or early January—designed to further support affordable homeownership. - ➤ Polar Park events director Sara Barlok said Boo in the Woo will end on October 30th—marking the close of the Halloween event—while the park will soon host Winter in Wooville, a month-long holiday light festival in December. - ➤ Worcester native Taylor Broadard is touring nationally in Hamilton and is performing today at the Citizens Opera House in Boston where the show runs through November 2 — after which it will move to Hartford from November 4 to 16. - ➤ Local band Gumby's Girlfriend released its first single 'C U L8r' on Oct.22—blending 90s sounds with emotional lyrics about a past breakup. - ➤ Paranormal investigator Jo MacGugan of Paxton led three small groups in an investigation at Salisbury House on Oct. 27—In Search of the Salisburys—that sold out and helped Preservation Worcester raise funds for fixing historic homes. - ➤ UMass Chan Medical School reached a tentative contract agreement with the union representing 700 physicians after seven Worcester representatives signed a letter urging higher wages. Officials expect the deal to be finalized soon—further negotiations are planned—adding to the ongoing dialogue on physician pay. Worcester Business Journal

- ➤ UMass Chan Medical School scientists received a $6.6 million grant to test gene editing for frontotemporal dementia. The four-year study will compare prime editing—an advanced method—and base editing to see which one can better restore brain protein levels in animal models and human neurons.
