  • Ralph's Rock Diner will host its second annual Diner, Drive In, & Die event with an alien theme at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 and Oct. 25, and organizers said guests can choose between a full-contact experience that leads them upstairs to encounter the aliens or a no-contact option while enjoying a party atmosphere with live music and vendors outside the venue.  Telegram & Gazette

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A commercial building that housed several local businesses burned on Monday at 817 to 823 Main St.—it was demolished by Tuesday, leaving an empty lot with a temporary fence and tarp while authorities have not determined the fire’s cause and it is unclear if the impacted businesses will reopen elsewhere.  Telegram & Gazette

  • A letter reported that the Polar Park fund will face a shortfall exceeding $2M by the end of the fiscal year as construction in the district is postponed due to an unpredictable market & high construction costs. Batista said high interest rates are also contributing to the delay.  Worcester Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A cast iron fountain from the 1800s has been restored and installed at Beechwood Hotel in Worcester by Dr. Charles Birbara—who co-owns the hotel with his wife Janet—after he purchased its remains in early 2019 and rebuilt it. The historic piece now honors the hotel's past and adds a unique feature to its courtyard.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Worcester collector Petunia Jade is selling a seven-foot long body basket for $800 on Facebook; she has kept it in her home for 20 years. The basket was used to carry bodies in the 1800s and for injured soldiers during the Civil War — Jade wants its new owner to care for it.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Educators, policymakers, parents and community leaders met at Worcester State University on October 17 to discuss how to support Latino students in Massachusetts. The meeting featured comments from Melissa Colón and President Barry Maloney (who noted the school’s 25% Latino enrollment and push for Hispanic-Serving Institution status) and included keynote speaker Viviana Abreu-Hernández warning that policy changes may cut healthcare and Head Start programs.  Worcester State University

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaitlyn Kenney Walsh will take over as president and CEO of the BCBSMA Foundation on Jan. 1—succeeding Audrey Shelto after nearly 13 years in leadership. She will lead the Boston-based organization that funds health programs across Central Massachusetts.  Worcester Business Journal
