- ➤ The Haunted Hillando Halloween Maze at Hebert Candy Mansion in Shrewsbury opens today from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays—with additional hours on Oct. 19 and 26—and tickets cost $10 with part of each sale benefiting Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services Inc. - ➤ Two Leicester police officers injured by a drunken driver in July remain in recovery—Officer Santiago faces a long recovery while Officer Kustigian has returned to light duty—and the Leicester Police Alliance will host a fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 4 at Cherry Valley American Legion Post at 167 Main St to help cover accident expenses. - ➤ Stacey Forrest of Thrive Support & Advocacy said the Family Support Center helps over 500 Worcester County families by providing free help with state service applications and community resource connections. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ United Way of Central Massachusetts received a little more than one million dollars from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to expand after-school programs—supporting more than 65 local programs and reaching about 3,000 students this school year. The organization has invested over nine million dollars in these programs in the past three years to offer safe and enriching activities for children while giving families an affordable childcare option. - ➤ Today, Councilor-at-Large Kathleen M. Toomey asked for a report on a plan to automatically deploy drones to help first responders during 911 calls—some council members raised concerns about privacy, cost, and replacing more staff, so the order was sent to the city manager's office for review. - ➤ Worcester City Council voted eight to two this week to reject an agreement that would let police work with ICE — a decision that came after a councilor was arrested in May for interfering with an ICE operation during a protest. 7 News Boston

- ➤ Daniel Linhardt, a WPI freshman who has battled cancer since he was two, said Kids & Art Foundation has helped him use art to cope during hospital stays and keep hope alive in his pursuit of biomedical engineering. - ➤ UMass Chan Medical School received a five-year, $4.4 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to study how transfer RNAs help melanoma spread— the deadliest type of skin cancer. The research, led by professor Richard I. Gregory—working with teams from Beth Israel Deaconess and Brown University—will explore tRNA changes that may offer new treatment targets. - ➤ Plumley Village, a 430-unit affordable housing community in Worcester, was sold for $100M on Sep 30 to a New York firm and a Braintree-based company.
