  • Encore Boston Harbour paid out over $46 million in jackpots in August, setting a record since 2019 and giving 16,628 winners a boost on slots, table games, and sports bets — the casino will use its strong performance to support local projects and prepare for fall crowds as online crypto gambling trends grow.  This Week In Worcester

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Worcester Public Library will celebrate 75 years of Peanuts on Saturday, October 4 at its main branch at 3 Salem Square. The free event will run from 11 AM to 2 PM and feature Snoopy meet and greet—art projects, a film screening, and a Linus blanket drive for local animal shelters.  This Week in Worcester

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester State University welcomed more than 800 first-year students and about 250 transfers in the diverse class of 2029—almost 50% identify as BIPOC/Latino and 50% are first-generation students. The enrollment also includes 9.5% out-of-state students, and first-year students have an average GPA of 3.4, indicating strong academic preparation.  Worcester State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former Worcester judge Lawrence Army Jr. admitted he violated ethics rules by appointing his father as special master in a divorce case—he agreed to pay a $4,000 fine, is no longer on the bench, and was last paid in June.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Records show that between January 1 and August 12, 2025, the Worcester City Council denied citizen petitions every 1.75 days—a 715% increase from earlier years as many petitions were rejected for not following city rules.  This Week In Worcester
  • Worcester City Manager Eric Batista said the city launched a blitz on litter with over 1,400 drop-off appointments booked + plans to build 1,600 affordable housing units to grow access to housing and wraparound services for people experiencing homelessness. HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Michael P. Hirsh from the City of Worcester Division of Public Health said COVID is rising as more people relax on safety measures and skip testing when they feel sick. Wastewater tests from Upper Blackstone Clean Water in Millbury showed virus levels more than doubled from the start of September — and updated vaccine guidelines now allow everyone to get the shot.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Tommy Cassell highlighted standout Central Mass girls' soccer performances for a poll that named Notre Dame's Ava Morrissey as Player of the Week after she received 43,343 votes — 44.9 percent — beating Douglas's Emily Ramsdell who got 42,223 votes.
