BUSINESS NEWS

  • Phillipston’s Red Apple Farm was voted second best in USA Today’s 10Best list of apple orchards—its rank rising from ninth last year—and trails only Lyman Orchards from Connecticut. The family farm offers a year-round New England experience with an orchard, cidery and restaurant along scenic Route 2.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • New England Metal and Hardcore Festival will take place at the Palladium located at 261 Main St. in Worcester, starting at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 20, and will host 25 metal and hardcore acts such as Lorna Shore and Cannibal Corpse. A pre-party featuring six bands will kick off upstairs tonight at 6:30 p.m.—setting the stage for a one-day outdoor event with vendors and food trucks.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Indigenous art by Nipmuc artists is on display at UMass Chan after its unveiling on Sept. 16 — a long sassafras paddle with designs honoring ties to water and healing. The piece was commissioned to extend the school’s land acknowledgement and foster connection with local Indigenous history.  UMass Chan Medical School
  • Worcester is now accepting nominations for its next Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate with applications due by 5 p.m. Oct. 27 and appointments beginning in January to serve multi-year terms—offering a $1,500 honorarium for the Poet Laureate and a $500 annual stipend plus a one-time $2,500 scholarship for the Youth Poet Laureate.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Tomorrow, The Petty Larceny Band will perform a Tom Petty tribute at Bull Run Restaurant at 8 p.m. with dinner seating at 6 p.m. On Sept. 21, Rachel Gloria Adams and Ryan Adams will host a mural talk at Worcester Art Museum from 2 to 3 p.m., and a Poet's Cauldron open mic along with a Zonkaraz tribute will take place, while Sleep Token will perform at DCU Center on Sept. 23.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester city officials will use a little over $1 million from a grant to develop climate lesson plans at Worcester Technical High School and study stormwater drainage. The funds will also cover a $50,000 summer workshop in 2026 for teachers to create curriculum that prepares students for future climate resiliency jobs.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials completed traffic improvements at Roosevelt Elementary by expanding the parking lot to over 40 spaces—adding a new bus lane and ADA-compliant sidewalks on a site bought six years ago. The project, funded through school capital funds and a $1 million HUD grant, has eased the pickup and drop-off congestion that once troubled the area.  Telegram & Gazette
  • U.S. Rep. James McGovern of Worcester said on Sept. 18 that ABC suspended Jimmy Kimmel for speaking his mind and that the move shows a worrisome shift towards government control of free speech. He urged viewers to stand up against this censorship—vowing that supporting open speech now will make a difference.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced on September 9 that the state joined six others and New York City to form the Northeast Public Health Collaborative—designed to share resources on emergency preparedness, vaccine recommendations, data collection, and infectious disease management.
