CULTURE NEWS

  • Silver Scream Con IV took place at the DCU Center from Sept. 12th to 14th and drew thousands of horror fans with live music by Ice Nine Kills and celebrity guests including WWE star Rhea Ripley who staged a dramatic onstage tussle with an Art the Clown cosplayer—local organizers met Monday to plan next year’s event.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Claude Monet: The Immersive Experience opened on Sept. 11 at Mercantile Center downtown, offering visitors a 20,000‑square‑foot digital display of Monet’s paintings across seven galleries.   • Trans-Siberian Orchestra will return to Worcester's DCU Center on November 29th with two shows at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m.—its winter tour Ghosts of Christmas Eve: The Best of TSO and More will feature fan favorites, lasers, snow and a free signing line for evening attendees.  Radio Worcester

  • The Telegram & Gazette is honoring a Student of the Week to recognize outstanding academic and community achievements in Central Massachusetts as the new school year unfolds. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs declared a level-2 drought today in central Massachusetts (including Worcester) and imposed restrictions on nonessential outdoor water use after August’s 1.78 inches of rain fell short of the typical 4.55 inches, leaving reservoir capacity below 74%.  This Week in Worcester
  • WPI and River Otter have developed RI-HTL, a new technology that destroys dangerous PFAS chemicals in wastewater and turns sludge into crude oil—a process that may lower waste disposal costs. They plan to build a large demonstration unit soon to prove the method works.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
  • State officials say many of Massachusetts’ 3,000 dams are outdated and face safety risks from stronger storms and climate change. The state will spend nearly $2 million on repairs in Central Mass and plans to remove over 10% of its dams by 2050 — a move that also aims to boost public safety and ecological benefits.  Telegram & Gazette

  • The Worcester City Council will meet today at 6:30 p.m. in the Esther Howland Chamber with a shortened agenda that covers the city’s response to the Sept. 6 storms — including a tornado that hit Holden — and reviews measures on fire safety and cleanup improvements, with Commissioner Goodwin’s letter and Councilor Russell’s input guiding the discussion.  Telegram & Gazette
  • State Sen. Robyn Kennedy spoke at Sherwood’s Diner today about Trooper Delgado-Garcia’s legacy and Worcester’s $30M sewage dispute — saying the state must get back at the table to negotiate a new deal. She also discussed a $5M immigrant legal defense fund, a proposed school cell phone ban with local choices, and a State Auditor record request that lawmakers call too broad.  Radio Worcester

  • Today, Teresa Simpson—a 65-year-old Sturbridge resident with late-stage ovarian cancer—speaks at a Capitol rally urging Congress to maintain funding for medical research amid proposed $18 billion NIH cuts and meets with Rep.
