ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday afternoon, Orange police rescued two boys from the Millers River using the Manny Tube—a water rescue device donated by the Manny 267 Foundation in honor of fallen officer Manny Familia, who died in 2021 while saving teens from drowning.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Smithsonian exhibit Voices and Votes: Democracy in America will open Saturday, Sept. 13 in Douglas and run through Oct. 25 with local discussions, a mock election for children, and a review of historical artifacts—programs are planned to boost civic engagement and help residents learn about their rights and responsibilities in government—local groups will lead events to strengthen community ties. EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Sept. 9, UMass Chan presented 55 Doctor of Nursing Practice students with white coats at a ceremony at the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing – the event marked their transition into clinical practice as they recited the Nightingale Pledge while faculty urged them to serve as a healing presence for patients.  UMass Chan Medical School
  • QCC President Dr. Luis Pedraja said fall enrollment has topped 9,000—marking a 14% surge and the highest count since 2011—driven by free college programs and collaborative efforts. This enrollment boost sets a strong foundation for the upcoming academic term in the community.  Radio Worcester

  • After five tornadoes hit Worcester County Saturday, large trees fell and damaged roofs, cars, and yards. Greg Smolan of AAA Northeast said most homeowners policies covered structural damage while claims for fallen trees not striking a home may be limited—homeowners should report damage immediately and wait until authorities say it is safe to return.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At a September 9 meeting, the Worcester City Council voted 6–4 to reject a state law requiring fire sprinklers in new and renovated multi-unit residential buildings—igniting debate among council members and officials who had supported the measure.  This Week in Worcester
  • Sen. Michael Moore said Worcester acted in good faith decades ago when it agreed to manage wastewater and urged the state to honor its commitment, even as courts have ruled against the city—potentially leaving it with tens of millions in liabilities. He also noted that over 100 lawmakers have asked the Attorney General to investigate PFAS chemicals in firefighter turnout gear after issues emerged with gear purchased by Quincy.  Radio Worcester
