- ➤ On Tuesday, Aug. 26, the Worcester Advisory Committee on the Status of Women honored community leader Winifred Octave with the Woman of Consequence Award for her role in forming the Green Hill Neighborhood Association and renovating Grant Square Park. The committee also recognized local student Jailene Matias as Young Woman of Consequence for her climate leadership through work with Mass Audabon's Youth Climate Leadership Program—showcasing the Empathy in Action theme. - ➤ A federal judge sentenced Hector Torres, 33, to seven years in prison and five years of supervised release on Tuesday for cocaine distribution charges after he pleaded guilty in May following a controlled package delivery from Puerto Rico in June 2022 — he fled arrest and was later captured. - ➤ Today, WPI announced it received a $12 million legacy gift from alumnus Carl Karlsson ’60 to boost faculty hiring and improve student success—part of the gift will fund special teaching roles for early career faculty. - ➤ Coach Dan Curran named Cal Swanson, a sophomore transfer from Illinois, as Holy Cross' starting quarterback, and he will lead the team in the season opener against Northern Illinois at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 30.
