Good morning, Worcester. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 25th of August.

CULTURE NEWS

  • At the former Denholm Building, bright windows now honor Worcester’s corset legacy with a deep red metal sculpture by designer Jennifer Rubin Garey—designed to recall over a century of vibrant fashion history downtown. Anne Marie Murphy is developing a walking tour and a book to uncover the stories of the women behind the city’s once-thriving corset industry.  Telegram & Gazette
  • On August 6, the Worcester Peace Choir sang at Regatta Point State Park to remember the bombing of Hiroshima and bring hope to the community. Organizers say the group will hold more events and plan a gathering on August 31 at Unitarian Universalist Church—inviting locals to join in singing for peace.  Telegram & Gazette
  • At That's Entertainment, a pop culture store on Park Ave in Worcester, customers are reading graphic novels such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II and Zatanna: Bring Down The House—titles that show a wide interest in comics; the store also has a second location on John Fitch Highway in Fitchburg.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Letters to the editor show local residents backing Dr. Satya Mitra for City Council, praising his long service, financial expertise, and dedication to our community. Other letters decried the closure in July of the Massachusetts Youth Recovery program at UMass Memorial Medical Center (which left youth with no inpatient detox option) and warned that youth struggling with addiction may end up in psychiatric units or juvenile detention.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Shriver Center at UMass Chan Medical School is finishing data collection for a study on infants’ social brain development and its link to maternal postpartum depression and anxiety. Pilot data from over 80 mother-child pairs shows a strong negative link between mothers’ mental health and babies’ social brain response — the study will soon extend to high-risk infants.  UMass Chan Medical School

SPORTS NEWS

  • Paul Harrington, founder of the Boston Amateur Baseball League, was honored on Sunday in Grafton with a tribute game organized by league members after health challenges limited his travel.
