COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City Manager Eric D. Batista announced that Green Hill Park will add 124 garden plots for local residents, with a lottery opening in spring 2026 for planting that marks the park's return to its agricultural roots. City leaders including Mayor Joseph M. Petty and District 2 Councilor Candy Mero-Carlson held a ribbon cutting on August 18—highlighting the park's ongoing improvements and efforts to support local food access.  Telegram & Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • Newly released body camera footage from May 8 shows ICE agents arresting Brazilian mother Rosane Ferreira-De Oliveira on Eureka Street while police kept her distressed daughter and baby safe—officials say the tense scene led to charges and further investigation.  MassLive

  • Acacia Strain will mark its 40th show at the Palladium in Worcester on Aug. 23 with a one-night Sadness & Failure Festival featuring live sets from Bodysnatcher, Ingrown, No Cure and Tribal Gaze—tickets cost $47 for general admission and $106 for reserved seating.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UMass Chan Medical School welcomed 313 new students on August 18—233 in medicine, 16 in nursing and 13 in biomedical sciences. Chancellor Michael F. Collins told the new students that their journey in healthcare had begun as he announced he would step down in July after leading the school for 19 years.  UMass Chan Medical School

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Greystar Management Services, which manages three Worcester apartment complexes, reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over a scheme that used anticompetitive algorithms—methods comparing competitors’ pricing—to set rents. Under the deal, the company will stop sharing sensitive data and using the disputed software for price recommendations.  Telegram & Gazette
  • On today’s Radio Roundtable, panelists discussed Worcester’s $30 million sewer lawsuit loss to Holden and problems with the city’s trash pickup plan — noting issues with contractor work and weak communication. They also said the upcoming city council race shows a partisan split and may see low turnout.  Radio Worcester
  • A Massachusetts bill by Rep. Lindsay Sabadosa would ban grocery stores from using customers’ biometric data to set prices or send ads—aiming to protect consumers as food insecurity grows. The House approved the bill on Aug. 18 and it would let shoppers sue if their data is misused.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Salisbury Mansion (dating to the 1770s) at 40 Highland St is having its roof replaced and is closed to visitors during the renovation. The Museum of Worcester is overseeing the work after the mansion was originally located in Lincoln Square.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Jhostynxon Garcia played his first game at first base for Triple-A Worcester on Aug. 17 in Des Moines where he made six putouts and a double play. He said he is ready to learn the new role further—manager Chad Tracy said he will get more chances this week at Polar Park.  Telegram & Gazette
