CULTURE NEWS

  • A missile that had been on display at Auburn’s Goddard Park for over 40 years was moved on Friday for repairs—its metal showed splits and rot—and Worcester’s EcoTarium will restore the Polaris missile for a new exhibit.  MassLive
  • John Capen Adams, known as Grizzly Adams, spent less than five years in California but became a legendary mountain man and is buried with his father in Charlton’s Bay Path Cemetery — his legacy lives on through the local middle school mascot and plans for a new film project.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Worcester City Council will meet on Tuesday, August 19 for the first time in five weeks to discuss 41 agenda items including a request to rename a street as Bethany Veney Way, a vote on appointing Shepard Allen from Bartlett Wealth Management to the Trust Funds Commission, and zoning changes for schools and disabled spaces—this meeting happens ahead of the Sept. 2 preliminary election. Councilors will review several petitions and orders during the session.  This Week In Worcester
  • The Worcester Housing Authority has begun renovations at 24 Mill St—a building built in 1937 that once housed one of the city’s first modern theaters—to convert it into a central office for management and maintenance staff from Lakeside Apartments. HEALTH NEWS

  • Elizabeth 'Lizzy' Mirekuaa Lartey—a Ghanaian DNP student and nurse in Worcester—launched Heritage Scrubs, a line of African-inspired designs, and has offered free health screenings in local churches and Ghana since 2018. She plans to study high blood pressure and social isolation in the African community as part of her ongoing scholarly work.  UMass Chan Medical School

  • On Saturday, top Red Sox prospect Payton Tolle threw 5 scoreless innings for the WooSox—reaching a fastball speed of 98.6 mph and earning the win in a 9-5 game against the Iowa Cubs.  MassLive
  • Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet pitched 7 innings on August 17 with 8 strikeouts and 1 run allowed, but the bullpen lost the lead in the ninth—resulting in a 5-3 loss to the Marlins. The loss kept the Sox 5 games behind in the AL East race.  MassLive
  • The Worcester Red Sox lost 8-5 on Sunday at Principal Park after Iowa hit back with home runs that erased the early lead. The Red Sox will host Jacksonville for a six-game series at Polar Park on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.  MassLive
