  • Matthew T. Ohman, a 41-year-old animal control officer with the Worcester Police Department for 12 years, died on Aug. 10 while playing basketball with his family — colleagues recalled his warm heart and dedication to supporting both animals and people.   • Former Worcester Police Chief Gary Gemme, a Navy veteran and writer, died last week at his home in Shrewsbury after his second battle with cancer, and he was surrounded by his family — he served 33 years with the department and is remembered for his lasting dedication to the community.  MassLive

  • Worcester Public Schools have finalized 104 bus routes for nearly 12,000 students as they prepare for the 2025-26 school year, which begins Aug. 25 for Grades 1-12 and Aug. 28 for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten.   • Patients in a Phase I/II trial of a dual vector gene therapy for GM2 gangliosidosis at UMass Chan Medical School showed a biochemical correction of the disease with minimal adverse reactions—treatment led to extended oral feeding and milder seizures while researchers plan to develop a single vector to deliver more therapeutic DNA.
