  • University Park hosted National Night Out as police and community partners set up nearly 150 tables and activities that attracted hundreds of residents—food, games and interactive booths helped build trust between law enforcement and the community.  Spectrum News 1
  • Massachusetts Farmers Market Week celebrates local farmers and runs through August 9 to ensure Worcester residents have access to fresh produce. Commissioner Ashley Randle visited the weekly Out to Lunch Festival on Worcester Common — where vendors like Owen Chase promote microgreens grown indoors — to highlight community food resources.  Spectrum News 1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Aug. 7th, Gov. Healey’s office awarded $3.3 million in grants to 25 school districts statewide, including Milford Public Schools, Spencer—East Brookfield School District, and Uxbridge Public Schools in Worcester County. Earlier on Aug. 4th, the state announced that 272 schools received high-dosage early literacy tutoring funded by revenue from the Fair Share Amendment to support one-on-one and small-group sessions.  This Week In Worcester
  • On Aug. 7, WPI announced that Crate Herbert will serve as vice president for university advancement and will start on Sept. 15. Herbert brings over 25 years of experience in higher education—she led advancement at Wentworth and held senior roles at Harvard—and will work with President Grace Wang to strengthen the university's fundraising efforts.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

  • First-time candidate Satya Mitra raised $81,653.99 by August 6—nearly 50% more than his competitors—for the Worcester City Councilor-at-Large race. Fourteen candidates will face a preliminary election on Sept. 2 to narrow the field for the November general election.  MassLive
  • On Aug. 6, the U.S. Postal Service celebrated 250 years of service at the Joseph D. Early Post Office in Worcester by unveiling a special sheet of 20 stamps and a reproduction of the first U.S. stamp (Worcester’s post office is one of 60 still in service from before the nation was founded). City officials and residents praised the service’s role in connecting communities (federal plans to privatize parts of the service have raised concerns among unions) and remembered its historic impact.  Telegram & Gazette
