  • Amelia Tieri of Worcester Green Corps said the group is cleaning up litter, auditing recycling, and urging residents to report dog waste on sidewalks to 311. The Corps will host volunteer events soon — a chance for locals to help improve their neighborhood — and they ask residents to learn proper recycling practices.  Radio Worcester

  • A former Friendly's franchise owner—Amol Kohli—acquired the restaurant chain’s parent company on July 22 and now leads Legacy Brands International, which also owns several other food chains. Friendly's runs 23 restaurants in Massachusetts, including Auburn, Gardner, Leominster and Marlborough.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Owners Ed and Kelli Kinsley announced that North Bowl Lanes in North Attleboro and Mohegan Bowl in Webster will be sold to Ryan Family Amusements this fall — the new company plans to keep bowling lanes, arcade games, and league programs unchanged — as the Kinsleys step away after 17 years of ownership.  Telegram & Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A Worcester man, 27-year-old Mugisha Jeanbosco, was found guilty on July 24th of first-degree murder and armed robbery for killing Leon Wilson Jr. of Fitchburg in 2019 in the Pie Alley area—sentencing is set for Aug. 1st.  This Week In Worcester
  • Former Uxbridge superintendent Michael Baldassarre was found not guilty of drunken driving on July 21 and accepted a plea to sufficient facts for negligent driving, which led to six months of administrative probation — he was fined $300 after being arrested on January 18.  Telegram & Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WPI researchers led by Professor Yan Wang developed a new recycling process that recovers 92% of metals from used batteries — saving 8.6% energy and reducing carbon emissions by 13.9% compared to older techniques — and the breakthrough may boost domestic supplies for electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
