- ➤ Sean McNamara spent his summer crafting spooky props for his Haunted Hillando Halloween Maze, which will move to the grounds of Hebert’s Candy Mansion at 574 Hartford Turnpike in Shrewsbury. - ➤ Asylum Street is a 70-yard dead-end off Summer Street named for the Worcester State Hospital that opened in the 1830s and later became known as the Asylum for the Chronic Insane—its route was shortened in the 1960s when Interstate 290 was built, leaving the area near the Joseph D. - ➤ The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra postponed its free Salute to Disney concert at Institute Park from July 20 to July 27 due to a rainy forecast—organizers expect better weather next Sunday. The concert will feature music from Encanto, Moana, Frozen, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin and will be led by associate conductor Jorge Soto with guest soloists Taylor Lawton, Elisabeth LaBarre, and cellist Sofia Hernandez-Williams. - ➤ The City of Worcester announced $4.4 million in Community Preservation Act awards to 18 projects that will improve open space, historic sites and affordable housing. Voters approved a 1.5 percent property tax surcharge in 2022, and selected projects include upgrades at Great Brook Valley Park and renovations at the Fatty Jenkins Cage Basketball Court. - ➤ Congressman Jim McGovern said the big tax bill cuts important programs like Medicaid and SNAP and gives too many breaks to the rich — he warned it will hurt many people. He also backed Worcester’s plan for a grocery store run by the city and said that right wing Epstein theories are now backfiring. Radio Worcester
- ➤ The Massachusetts Department of Transportation awarded a 35-year contract to Ireland-based Applegreen to rebuild or refurbish 18 service plazas along the pike and selected highways, including demolishing three stops in Charlton and Westborough that will be rebuilt starting next year. Applegreen will upgrade facilities with new EV chargers, modern bathrooms, and redesigned service areas—while Global Partners continues to challenge the bidding process. Telegram & Gazette
