Good morning, Worcester. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 5th of July.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legislators sent Gov. Healey a $61 billion fiscal 2026 budget and interim plan on June 30, which includes a reserve of over $800 million & aims to shield the state from potential federal funding cuts that may affect Medicaid and clean energy incentives. The governor now must decide on final actions while the budget remains technically late as fiscal 2026 is already two days in effect.  Telegram & Gazette
  • The state Department of Transportation and Mobility will expand Worcester’s Traffic Calming Speed Hump Program by installing over 100 temporary and permanent speed humps and raised crosswalks on local streets—part of a broader effort to improve traffic safety. The program follows the 25 mph limit set in September and will let residents petition City Council to request additional measures amid local safety concerns.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Franca Services Inc. in Northborough and its president David Franca face $744,224 in citations for alleged wage law violations that left over 100 workers without proper wages and earned sick time. The Attorney General's investigation found the company misclassified employees, failed to keep payroll records, and did not notify workers of their earned sick time policy — a move that underscores state efforts to protect workers' rights.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Gov. Maura Healey signed a $60.9 billion state budget on July 4 and vetoed $130 million in spending as she prepares for federal funding cuts and rising costs. She also filed a $130 million supplemental bill (with a $100 million flexible pool for economic changes and a $30 million housing stabilization fund) to give her administration new cost-cutting powers for fiscal 2026.  Telegram & Gazette
