CRIME NEWS

  • A 14-year-old girl was fatally struck by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Worcester Thursday night at about 8 p.m.—transit police said she was trespassing near Atlas Street and are investigating the incident while extending condolences to her family.  7 News Boston

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joe Fusco Jr. is a Worcester humorist and stand-up poet who shares his frustration over being called 'Joey' and explains the mix-up in his family naming traditions.   • Twenty-two new police officers graduated from Worcester Police Academy yesterday at Worcester Technical High School, with eighteen joining the Worcester Police Department, three heading to Auburn, and one assigned to Holden — several received awards for academic and performance excellence.  Telegram & Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore redesigned the Pines Course at the International in Bolton, and it opened on June 6, shortening the course to 7,103 yards after over $40 million in upgrades by Escalante Golf. Worcester Country Club has invited Crenshaw to play — a nod to his deep ties in local golf history — as the area builds on a proud tradition.  Telegram & Gazette
  • On Friday, June 27, local summer sports games were held with matchups including Auburn at Shrewsbury at 6 p.m., Bravehearts at Nashua at 6 p.m., Grafton at Northbridge at 5:30 p.m., Main South at Northborough at 5:30 p.m., Milford at Hudson at 7 p.m., Framingham at Cherry Valley at 8 p.m. and Tatnuck at Shrewsbury at 6 p.m. The games took place at venues such as Sherwood Middle, Holman, Valley Tech, Memorial, Riverside, Rochdale and Tivnan and may have seen schedule changes due to weather or field conditions.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Jake Hajdu, the Elon University shortstop from Sterling, hit two grand slams in five games for the Worcester Bravehearts, boosting the team with loaded bases against Nashua.
