  • A heat wave is coming and seven splash pads in Central Massachusetts will open this summer to let families cool off. Options include Cristoforo Colombo Spray Park in Worcester set to open July 1 and Davis Farmland COWabunga Splash Park in Sterling launching July 4 plus parks that offer either free play or require a fee during Memorial Day to Labor Day hours.  Telegram & Gazette

  • A Cold Stone Creamery store will soon join Planet Smoothie and Wetzel’s Pretzels at 531 Main St downtown where storefronts have been reworked with new signs.   • UMass Chan Medical School Chancellor Michael F. Collins announced today that he will conclude his chancellorship in July after 19 years of leading the school. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MassWildlife said nearly 5,000 black bears now live in Massachusetts and are expanding east as they are in mating season until mid-July. Residents are urged to remove bird feeders—main attractants—and secure any livestock to keep bears from learning bad habits.  Spectrum News 1

  • Radio Worcester hosted a roundtable where critics questioned the city manager's media access and leadership while panelists discussed Chief Saucier’s human rights hearing and City Hall transparency issues.  Radio Worcester
  • The Worcester Zoning Board of Appeals on Monday denied a special permit for a 75-foot-tall billboard at 5 Norton Drive near Indian Lake after residents raised concerns that its LED lights would cause light pollution and driver distraction—board members noted that clear public input opposed the project.  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • UMass Chan scientist Dr. Nandadasa found a process that cuts a key protein into two parts which help build cilia, tiny hair-like structures on cells essential for proper function. This work may lead to new treatments for diseases such as Meckel-Gruber syndrome, Joubert syndrome and cystic kidney disease—research published in Nature Communications.  UMass Chan Medical School
