COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in the Indian Lake neighborhood opposed a 75-foot digital billboard planned for 5 Norton Drive, saying it would harm beautification efforts, affect wildlife, and lower property values since it is less than 400 feet from some windows. The Zoning Board of Appeals voted on the special permit on June 23 — community members had voiced strong objections ahead of the vote.  Telegram & Gazette

  • The Queen’s Cup—a bakery at 56 Water St. with 13 years in business—will close on Sunday, June 29. Founder Renne King said the shop faced tough years with crushing debt and chose to close to give her family the care they deserve.  This Week In Worcester

  • Frank Pupillo will host four radio-sponsored Fest events at Indian Ranch in Webster starting June 29 with the Local CountryFest — the shows include GrungeFest on July 13, HairFest on July 19, and RokFest on September 6. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Patrick Gallagher, MBA, brings over 20 years of human resources experience and will join UMass Chan Medical School as the deputy executive vice chancellor, people strategy starting June 30 — his office will be on the main Worcester campus.  UMass Chan Medical School

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On June 10, protesters disrupted a city council meeting at City Hall, and councilors later issued statements blaming the interruption while abandoning most agenda items; today the council will reconvene with a sole item—its annual evaluation of the city manager.  This Week In Worcester
  • Worcester City Manager Eric Batista said City Hall now uses long-planned security upgrades like non-invasive scanners and a kiosk check-in system to keep staff and visitors safe.
