  • Whitinsville Golf Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary with a centennial cocktail party on Friday—members will then take part in a nine-hole tournament on Saturday using hickory clubs and mesh golf balls. The club, which opened on June 27, will see members in vintage attire as they honor its history.  Telegram & Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A Worcester man, Michael Wilcox Jr., is held without bail after he allegedly shot and killed his older brother during a dispute at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18—authorities say the incident marks the city's first homicide of 2025 and an episode of domestic violence.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester Public Schools superintendent Rachel Monárrez attended her final School Committee meeting on June 18 and announced she is leaving to become superintendent of the Orange Unified School District in California. Former Deputy Superintendent Brian Allen, named in May, will take over after Monárrez’s three-year tenure (which saw new administrative models and reforms in discipline).  Telegram & Gazette
  • Worcester Polytechnic Institute has appointed Daniel Linzell as its next Bernard M. Gordon Dean of Engineering, effective October, after a nationwide search. Linzell brings his leadership from managing a $225 million NSF research portfolio and key academic roles at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EcoTarium euthanized Ralph the turkey vulture after his worsening arthritis made him too uncomfortable to serve as an animal ambassador. He had worked at the museum since 2017 and taught visitors about wild vultures — leaving a legacy the staff will always remember.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • During a June 17 meeting, Worcester City Council discussed threats against public officials as councilors reported receiving death threats, bomb threats, and harassing messages online—one councilor recounted a public confrontation. Councilor King asked the city manager to provide a report on safety protocols for officials when threats occur.  This Week In Worcester

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by the Greater Boston Food Bank and Mass General Brigham found that more than one in three households faced food insecurity in Massachusetts in 2024 with rates reaching one in two in some western counties (studies estimate up to $2 billion annually would be needed to solve the problem). The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts in Chicopee said it is now providing over 1.2 million meals each month and is bracing for further federal SNAP cuts (its busiest period in 43-year history).  Spectrum News 1
