CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Three men—Sheldon D. Thorpe, Shaquille Watford, and Jeffrey S. Toney—pleaded not guilty yesterday at Worcester Superior Court for the fatal shootings of Tracy and Evan Landry in a Brookside Avenue apartment in November, with police reporting the victims were shot multiple times with an assault rifle and a pretrial conference set for Aug. 15. - ➤ Three Massachusetts men, Shaquille Watford, Jeffrey Toney, and Sheldon Thorpe, were indicted for the November 2024 shooting deaths of Evan Landry and his mother at Tatnuck Square Apartments in Worcester — they are held without bail and are set to appear in court on Aug. 15. MassLive
- ➤ A man was charged with disorderly conduct for knocking over a decorative plant during a City Council meeting on June 10 that ended abruptly after protesters entered City Hall—City Manager Batista said the building is not open for protests and Mayor Petty is considering remote meetings for safety. - ➤ WPI announced today that Matthew Thaler is the new vice president and general counsel to lead the school’s legal work; he brings over twenty years of experience (he served as interim general counsel since October) and has been a trusted advisor since joining WPI in 2018 (helping improve risk management). - ➤ Lauren Hill, a former English teacher with strong family ties to Saint John's—her father and two uncles are alumni—was named the new principal and will start on July 1, succeeding interim principal Christopher Cowan. She holds degrees from Manhattan College and Worcester State University and is pursuing a doctorate while serving as assistant principal at Xaverian Brothers School. Telegram & Gazette

- ➤ A Massachusetts group returned from a 10-day trip around Berlin, Stockholm, and Oslo where they toured prisons and learned how European systems use rehabilitation to help people reenter the community. The leaders from Legendary Legacies and Dismas House said the trip showed that stripping away freedom without extra punishment can work better—Worcester will soon host Swedish experts to learn more. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ UMass Chan associate professor Stephanie Carreiro received a $50,000 grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to build digital tools that help people get care for substance use disorder in underserved areas. Her project will use a mobile app—RAE cHealth—and a wearable sensor system during a 30-day pilot to connect patients with recovery coaches. UMass Chan Medical School
