  • Out to Lunch Festival and Farmers’ Market returns to Worcester Common Oval on June 18 and will run every Wednesday until August 20 from 11 AM to 3 PM—one hour longer than previous years. The event will include an expanded market with more vendors, live music at noon, interactive public art, themed days, and a free grocery tote with qualifying purchases.  This Week In Worcester

CRIME NEWS

  • Milford teen Marcelo Gomes da Silva, released from ICE detention on June 5 after a May 31 arrest while driving with his volleyball team, told NBC that agents — who claimed they were searching for his father — never asked him about his family, raising doubts about ICE’s official account as local authorities and his loved ones continue to face uncertainty.  MassLive

  • Winners of the 'Poems in and out of Places' contest will read their poems on June 17 at the Museum of Worcester — 30 Elm St — as part of the 'The Poem Next Door' exhibition. The 2023 contest received about 100 entries and selected 24 winning poems, including four honorable mentions.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester Public Schools Communications Department received five national Publications and Digital Media Excellence Awards from the National School Public Relations Association. The department earned two excellence awards in 2025, including one for writing and one for marketing, and had previously won three awards in 2024 for its multimedia campaign—showing its strong commitment to effective communication.  This Week In Worcester
  • UMass Chan Medical School leaders Kristen Matteson, MD, MPH, and Mary Munson, PhD, were selected as two of 100 fellows for the prestigious ELAM program at Drexel University College of Medicine to boost female leadership in academic health care. They will work on projects to develop mid-career faculty programs and improve mentoring practices with online assignments and community-building activities starting in June and ending in April 2026 — their selection follows recent awards for outstanding mentoring.  UMass Chan Medical School
  • UMass Chan’s Board of Trustees approved six new endowed chairs, five faculty appointments, and the renaming of an existing chair on June 11 (at UMass Chan). The changes honor highly accomplished faculty and memorialize a cherished community member (reflecting a valued legacy).  UMass Chan Medical School

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Worcester City Hall, protesters disrupted the June 10 City Council meeting by chanting 'ICE out of Worcester now,' which forced an early adjournment. Mayor Petty said more than 40 agenda items were left unaddressed because the protest prevented citizens from speaking.  MassLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • The union representing workers at the Motivating Youth Recovery program claims UMass did not promote the teen substance use recovery service properly—leading to low enrollment—while the hospital said patients prefer home- and office-based care and cited financial troubles. UMass said patient admissions will end on June 20 and the program will close on July 7 as it helps current patients complete treatment and supports nearly 30 employees in finding new roles.  Telegram & Gazette
