  • Valerie Zolezzi-Wyndham, CEO of Promoting Good, has spent five years guiding major local employers through challenges with diversity, equity, and inclusion and helped them stay true to these values amid political pressures. In May — her firm launched the Cultiv8 leadership program that uses targeted assessments based on scientific research.  Worcester Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Debrin Adon Suero became the first in his family to earn a college degree on Monday May 19, thanks to a partnership between the public schools and Clark University—he built strong ties at University Park and now will work as a software engineer at Wayfair in Greater Boston.  Telegram & Gazette
  • High schools across Central Mass. held some outdoor diploma ceremonies and will host future graduation events at the DCU Center in Worcester, with ceremonies scheduled from May 19 to June 9—each school setting its own date and venue.  Telegram & Gazette
  • On May 15, 2025, retired nurse Eileen Montecalvo—aged 81 and with 50 years in nursing—earned her master's degree in nursing from Worcester State University, becoming its oldest female degree recipient. She said she plans to mentor new nurses in the future.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Barry Maloney has led Worcester State since July 2011 and is now the second longest-serving president among Massachusetts' public colleges — second only to UMass Chan Medical School's leader. The school has grown after COVID-19 with rising spring 2025 enrollment and new programs like free tuition for families earning less than $75,000 and a top-ranked online nursing master's program.  Worcester State University

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Worcester City Councilor Kathleen Toomey said protesters on Eureka Street interfered with police and ICE during the May 8 arrest of a Brazilian mother and failed to help her two daughters. Her comment comes after body camera footage was released and as other council members offered differing views on the incident.  MassLive
  • Massachusetts health insurers will be required to cap deductible and copay increases for 2026 to about 4.8% of medical inflation under new regulations from a 2025 law. The Division of Insurance issued guidance on March 12—setting the deadline for insurers to file rate proposals—and Gov. Healey’s office says the move aims to help residents manage rising health care costs.  Worcester Business Journal
