EDUCATION NEWS

  • WPI held its 156th graduation on May 16 at the DCU Center where 1,298 students received their diplomas and remembered classmates who died during 2021-2022—the Class of 2025 being the last to have attended during that period.   • Eileen Montecalvo, 81, earned a master of science in nursing at Worcester State University on Thursday evening—she received a standing ovation and plans to mentor the next generation of nurses.  Worcester State University
  • Worcester Public Schools and the School Committee are weighing school-related uses for the former Becker College building at 61 Sever St, which the city bought in 2021.   • City Manager Eric Batista signed an executive order on May 16 that sets new rules for city employees working with ICE agents.   • In Boylston, a bridge over I-290 has been named after local Navy airman John 'Jay' Burkhardt Jr., who died in a 1990 helicopter crash, following a petition to the Legislature and ongoing family tributes each year—keeping his memory alive as Memorial Day approaches.   • Worcester officials released police body camera footage and five 911 call recordings on Friday from an incident on May 8 when ICE agents detained a Brazilian woman on Eureka Street.
