  • On Charlotte Street (just feet from Park Avenue), a trinket trading post that swaps toys and gadgets is brightening mornings. Launched a month ago, it has become a community hit as local children and college students add and trade items.  Telegram & Gazette

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ameresco announced on May 4 it will spin off its biofuels unit into the new venture Neogenyx Fuels, with Ameresco holding 70% and HASI investing $400 million. The venture is set to close later this quarter and aims to be a leading biogas developer as renewable natural gas demand grows.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Pecorino Cheese Shop, a family-run business on Route 30, announced it will close its doors on July 31 after 16 years. The owner, Simone Linsin, plans farewell parties and a sell-off before retiring to Italy for a quieter life – a sign of a changing local food scene.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Brookfield Elementary School remains open for now after a close school committee vote — another vote may occur on May 18 if a tight budget forces further cuts. Local supporters and officials are reworking the district's budget to address potential staff and resource reductions.  MassLive

FINANCE NEWS

  • Worcester-based cybersecurity firm SideChannel reported a revenue drop to $3.4M in Q2 while rising expenses led to a net loss and a going concern warning for meeting obligations over the next 12 months. The firm said it will seek additional capital + reassess its offerings to stabilize performance.  Worcester Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • UMass Chan scientists Dr. Erik Sontheimer and Dr. Wen Xue developed prime assembly, a gene editing method that can insert long DNA segments without causing double-strand breaks. Described in Nature, the technique aims to treat genetic diseases by replacing mutated genes & may progress to animal models.  UMass Chan Medical School

SPORTS NEWS

  • WPI softball won the NEWMAC tournament last weekend at Rooftop Field after a record-setting 42-3 season and earned an automatic NCAA bid. The team will host a four-team regional tomorrow with its first game at 11 a.m. against Albertus Magnus.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Local area coaches (who reported standout performances) led voters to honor Grafton’s Greyson Rynkowski as the Hometeam Boys’ Lacrosse Player of the Week with 175 votes (passing contenders from St. John's and St. Bernard's).  Telegram & Gazette
  • Bromfield School’s Darragh O’Connor earned top honors in last week’s Hometeam Girls’ Lacrosse Player of the Week poll with 816 votes.   • Assumption softball clinched an NCAA berth with a dramatic walk-off win over Southern New Hampshire on May 10 at Marois Field.
