COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two Japanese atomic bomb survivors visited Worcester on Tuesday to share their firsthand experiences from Hiroshima and warn against the normalization of nuclear weapons. Organizers say the event supports ongoing nuclear disarmament efforts through education and advocacy.  Radio Worcester
  • Venture Community Services secured a $2.76M tax-exempt bond to purchase and renovate a 19,130 sqft building on West Main in Dudley. The nonprofit announced the funding Wednesday and plans to expand services for people with disabilities.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Massachusetts State Lottery awarded its first $1 million grand prize when the 1887 Trust of Boston claimed the winning ticket from the new 'Loteria' game sold at Appletown Market on Main Street in Sterling on May 6.   • Central Mass native Jill Lepore won the Pulitzer Prize in History yesterday for her book We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution — win that recalls her roots as a Worcester native and Harvard professor. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kamden Duprey was honored as Worcester State University's first MAIPSE graduate today during a ceremony attended by family, friends and faculty. President Barry Maloney and program coordinator Lynn Thompson praised his remarkable growth and noted that the program (partnering with local school districts) boosts academic and social success.  Worcester State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WPI is expanding its partnership with ProAmpac to research fiber-based alternatives that aim to replace plastic packaging and reduce food spoilage through temperature management. Experts from several departments (including chemical engineering and materials science) will lead the project to cut waste and protect our local environment.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The AG fined Donizetti’s Tile Services $220K for misclassifying workers and not paying overtime during a routine inspection at The Bridge community center in Worcester. Officials said the fine follows the inspection findings and could lead to further reviews.  Worcester Business Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Anna Maria College will close at the end of this semester — ending its historic baseball program as the team makes a playoff run. The AmCats, led by coach Dan Briand, are set to face Westfield State today at Bridgewater State in the MASCAC tourney.  Telegram & Gazette
  • The Hometeam poll, presented by the YMCA of Central Mass, invites readers to vote on players after last week’s competition where Notre Dame's Kat Nicopolous led with 4,345 votes (51%) from coach-reported performances.  Telegram & Gazette
