BUSINESS NEWS

  • American Flatbread will open a new venue on Saturday in Worcester’s Canal District that brings back public candlepin bowling lanes for the first time in five years — the 10-lane center is part of a mixed-use space in The Cove that offers wood-fired pizza, salads and local beers on tap.  Worcester Business Journal
  • On Tuesday, business leaders met at Downtown Worcester's Glass Tower building to discuss how employee ownership can boost workplace culture and offer tax benefits, loan incentives, and a path for owners nearing retirement. Leaders from Worx Printing, Burkart Flutes and Piccolos, and Lampin Corp. shared examples that show employee ownership has grown in popularity — a sign of expanding support for worker-owned models in the region.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Niche Hospitality Group, known for The Fix Burger Bar and Bocado Tapas Wine Bar, will open two new restaurants in Worcester this summer—Vivienne Coastal Mediterranean Restaurant at 446 Main St. is expected to open mid-August with seating for 230 and 40-50 staff—and Green Island Oyster Bar at 90 Harding St. will open in June serving seafood and featuring an extensive rum list.  Worcester Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brian Allen was selected by the Worcester School Committee as the new superintendent of Worcester Public Schools on May 1 and will take over on July 1 after contract negotiations are completed. A lifelong Worcester kid who has served as deputy superintendent, Allen will continue the five-year plan—focusing on improved resource allocation and school funding.  MassLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Worcester officials confirmed that the city clerk verified the signatures of fourteen candidates for the six at-large City Council seats and three for the District E School Committee seat for the Sept 2 preliminary election—one council candidate’s signature is still pending. Some races will skip the preliminary round and head straight to the November 4 ballot, with both incumbents and challengers competing for office.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Worcester City Manager Eric D. Batista did not reappoint Human Rights Commission Chair Ellen Shemitz and Vice Chair Elizabeth O’Callahan when their volunteer terms ended on April 30—this decision came as the commission had been critical of city officials. The board now must select new leaders and continues to push for the police documents it requested.  MassLive
  • Worcester City Manager Eric D. Batista proposed an operating budget of $947,928,261 for FY26—a 3.3% increase from the current year—with new funding for PFAS-free firefighter gear and a plan to separate the Parks Department from Public Works. He is asking the city council for a hearing on May 13 and seeks nearly $159 million in borrowing for key projects such as a new South Division Fire Station and school feasibility studies.  MassLive
