EDUCATION NEWS

  • WPI hosted its annual Undergraduate Research Projects Showcase where seniors presented Major Qualifying Projects in areas such as sustainable design, robotics and cybersecurity. Faculty, sponsors and community members gathered to review innovative work that opens doors for future research and career opportunities.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
  • On April 30, UMass Chan Medical School held Educational Recognition Awards in Worcester to honor faculty from its three schools. Dr. Howard J. Sachs gave his Last Lecture (An Inevitable Journey) after receiving both the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Teaching and the Manning Prize for Excellence in Teaching.  UMass Chan Medical School
  • Governor Healey announced a $70M career technical education expansion for 28 schools — Worcester Technical High will receive $3.75M, Leicester High $3M, and Leominster Center for Technical Education $1,027,000. The grants will launch new vocational programs and shorten waitlists.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Open Sky Community Services announced on May 1 that it will operate only two residential recovery homes for women formerly run by Community Healthlink, leaving other programs to be managed by other organizations amid transition talks by UMass Memorial Health. A union representative (Local 509) expressed disappointment over the decision.  Telegram & Gazette

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Main South CDC purchased parcels (11 and 12 Hammond St.) on Thursday for $1.3M to build Hammond Heights, a five story apartment building with 41 units offering workforce and senior housing in Main South. The project received a variance to reduce parking requirements and will use $4M in tax credits.  Worcester Business Journal
  • The last parts of the historic Primetals Technologies building that once housed Morgan Construction are being demolished near I-290 at 40-88 Crescent St. Criterion Group has listed the property for sale & has yet to reveal redevelopment plans.  Telegram & Gazette
