Good morning, Worcester. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Worcester Public Library will host its first anti-prom on April 29 for 12-18 year olds at 3 Salem St from 6-7:30 p.m. The event will offer movies, snacks, music, dancing, crafts and henna tattoos by Wicked Good Henna as a free, relaxed alternative to traditional proms. MassLive
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Ken Uracius purchased Cohasse Country Club in Southbridge from its members and plans to invest about $3 million — money that will restore the historic nine hole course over the next three years. He will start renovations this November and convert the club to a semi private facility that offers public play to help boost membership. Telegram & Gazette
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Since March, Philip Stevens of Carter & Stevens Farm in Barre has been taking apart a 180-year-old church built in Coldbrook Springs and later moved to Greenfield to save it from being torn down for a new playground by the Greenfield YMCA. He is carefully removing large wooden beams so he can rebuild the structure at his farm with the steeple kept as a main feature—although it will not serve as a church. Telegram & Gazette
- ➤ The Punk in the Park tour, headlined by Bad Religion and Pennywise, will hold its only New England stop on Sept. 27 at the Palladium Outdoors on Main St in Worcester — the full day event offers music, craft beer tasting and food from local vendors — and tickets start at $59.99 with VIP options available. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Southern Worcester County Education Collaborative will close its specialized developmental program for high-needs students on Aug. 15 due to low enrollment, rising costs, and teacher shortages. Parents and staff are frustrated by the late notice (they were told by email) and worry about finding new local placements (few alternatives exist) for the students. Telegram & Gazette
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday, the Worcester Regional Transit Authority voted to extend its fare-free bus program until June 2026 as part of its FY2026 budget in Worcester—this marks the sixth renewal since the program began during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020. MassLive
- ➤ On April 15, the presidents of five Worcester colleges sent a letter to city council objecting to a ballot question that would require them to invest (0.5% of their endowments) into a city fund (to support housing, economic, and community development). The colleges said forcing the investment would act like a tax that could hurt student aid and research, while city leaders claim it will benefit Worcester and voters will decide in November. MassLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Gabby Demac from Shrewsbury will run the 129th Boston Marathon on April 21 for the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge to honor her recovery from stage 3 Hodgkin's lymphoma over five years ago.
