CRIME NEWS

  • Federal prosecutors announced on Monday (April 14) that Tong Tran, a 34-year-old Worcester man, faced federal charges for pressing methamphetamine pills after a search of his residence uncovered a pill press, chemicals, 3.3 kilograms of methamphetamine, and about $8,000 in cash; he faces charges for possession with intent to distribute controlled substances carrying penalties up to 20 years in prison.  This Week In Worcester

  • Worcester Art Museum announced that its new Arms and Armor Galleries featuring the Higgins Armory Collection will open on Nov. 25 — timed-entry reservations begin on Oct. 22 on its website.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Brooklyn Demme and John Hayeck will show their films 'Mountain Lion' and 'Fakes' at the Massachusetts Independent Film Festival in Southbridge on April 25 and April 26 at the Wellsworth Hotel — the films share a family drama and a teen comedy that locals may enjoy. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two prominent Irish civic leaders, Lilian Seenoi Barr and Niamh Kennedy, will visit Worcester State University from April 22 to 25 to receive honorary doctorates for their work in public service, economic development and social justice. They will join a fireside chat on April 24 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in Sullivan Auditorium and take part in campus events that highlight international ties.  Worcester State University
  • The City of Worcester Youth Council will host a free convention on April 24 for young people ages 12 to 24 at Doherty Memorial High School — located at 299 Highland St. from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with an after-party ending at 6 p.m. — where attendees can learn about youth advocacy and network with city officials.  This Week In Worcester
  • Worcester State University earned the Silver Military Friendly School and Military Friendly Spouse designations for the school year 2025 to 26 after showing strong support for military students.   • Rev. Dr. Debora Jackson, dean of WPI Business School since January, said her roles as a pastor and tech team leader shaped her unique leadership style inspired by her grandmother’s protest in the 1950s—she shared her journey and faith at a recent Workers Credit Union event while emphasizing community service.   • Residents can now use an interactive map from Hummingbird Central to check the progress of ruby-throated hummingbirds as they arrive in Massachusetts in late April.
