CULTURE NEWS

  • Worcester native Samantha Rose Valletta produces and acts in the indie film Watching Mr. Pearson, which will debut at Somerville Theatre on April 19, 20 and 21. The film follows a touching story of a fading Hollywood star with Q&A sessions planned after screenings.  Telegram & Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Massachusetts residents earned the highest hourly wage in New England as of December 2025, making $42.90 an hour, up from $42.00 in June 2025, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Connecticut and Rhode Island reported lower wages, while national figures show Washington workers earn more.  Telegram & Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Electric vehicle chargers will be installed on Russell Street near Elm Park, Sever, Oberlin, and Vernon Streets near Vernon Hill Park this summer or early fall. Funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, they will go live once National Grid + finalizes transformer plans and technical details.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • The cardiology fellows from St. Vincent Hospital won the American College of Cardiology Jeopardy-style contest in New Orleans after beating 40 teams, bringing pride to their Worcester community. They balanced contest preparation with intensive patient care during their fellowship.  Radio Worcester
  • WPI researchers in Worcester developed a 1.6 mm flexible optical fiber that can be steered through an endoscope to treat voice box tumors, testing it in a 3D-printed larynx and reaching 81% of targets that were hard to access. The device may offer an outpatient option for patients who cannot use general anesthesia.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
  • Worcester Community Midwifery is working on buying property for a new birth center as local providers try to fill health care gaps after nearby facility closures. The development comes as freestanding birth centers statewide face challenges with low reimbursement rates (including the only center in Massachusetts at risk of closing).  Worcester Business Journal

  • Plans to transform the former Leicester Country Club (est. 1894) call for 192 apartments and 98 townhomes. The Arlington-based developers will present their proposal to the Planning Board on April 21 for a project on a 200-acre site east of the Walmart Supercenter.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Patrick Sandoval, a Red Sox pitcher, threw his first rehab pitch since elbow surgery on April 8 at Polar Park. He pitched 3⅓ innings with three hits and walks and said he was grateful to be back (he will resume rehab in Nashville in six days).  Telegram & Gazette
