  • Richard Lavey has been promoted to chief operating officer at The Hanover Insurance Group—he has worked at the company since 2004 and will now lead the efforts to integrate its business and technology groups.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Kinefac, a Worcester-based manufacturer that builds custom machines for many industries, is boosting its long-term innovation by training workers from local vocational schools (and major local colleges) to build and keep new skills. Nearly half of its team has worked at the company for 20 years or more, showing that its practical training helps workers build long-term careers.  Worcester Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old woman pleaded guilty to four counts of second-degree murder in connection with a 2022 Worcester home fire that killed four people—she also admitted to charges of arson and assault with a dangerous weapon—resolving her case.  MassLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Worcester actor John Morello will debut his version of T. S. Eliot's poem The Waste Land in a six-show run from April 11 to 19 at Fletcher Auditorium at the Museum of Worcester—tickets cost $25 with discounts for seniors, museum members, and students. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Devens-based Electric Hydrogen opened its 100-megawatt electrolyzer plant in December to produce green hydrogen from renewable energy for industrial use—designed to cut production costs by up to 60%. The plant has drawn support from Gov. Healey and Congresswoman Trahan—underscoring its role in advancing local clean energy manufacturing.  Worcester Business Journal
  • In February, Greater Worcester’s unemployment rate increased from 4.8% to 5.2% and rose above 5% for the first time since August 2021, with 1,573 more residents jobless + the labor force growing by 191 people. The state Labor and Workforce Development released the figures to highlight an overall upward trend in unemployment statewide + additional regions also saw job losses.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Quinsigamond Community College has partnered with Worcester’s new startup hub to launch the Auxilium Center for Entrepreneurship this fall. The center will offer flexible business programs and receive a $300,000 commitment over three years from the Cliff and Susan Rucker Foundation—helping students build practical skills for future ventures.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Today, The Princeton Review named the game design programs at Clark University and WPI among the nation’s best—Clark ranked third for undergraduates and fifth for graduates while WPI placed 12th and 13th, making them the only Massachusetts schools on the lists.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A proposed bill H 1003 / S 586 would let the state stop outdoor watering during a drought—water for farms and businesses would be exempt. Lawmakers and environmental groups say the change is needed to handle more frequent droughts and protect local water supplies.  Worcester Business Journal
