COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fire service leaders and fire protection experts held a live fire demonstration at Institute Park to show how home fire sprinklers quickly control fires and give people time to escape. In one room a sprinkler activated in 15 seconds while an identical room without sprinklers burned completely in 3 minutes 45 seconds — the test proved that sprinklers can make a life-saving difference.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Charter Communications will close its call center at 95 Higgins St. in Worcester and move 174 employees to other U.S.-based call centers by June 26—staff can choose between relocation or severance benefits while the building will still host field technicians and Spectrum News TV. The City of Worcester said the closure will not affect its ongoing negotiations over a new cable contract.  Telegram & Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • 41-year-old Brazilian national Flavio Alexandra Alves, also known as Ronaldo, was arrested Wednesday in Worcester on federal charges for allegedly aiding a transnational human smuggling ring by coordinating airline ticket purchases and money transfers to help immigrants from Brazil, with his hearing set for today morning.  MassLive

  • Today the Worcester Renaissance Market runs at Rockland Trust Plaza from noon to 8 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting at 1 p.m., while on March 29 the Punk Rock Flea Market is at Hotel Vernon and a music show featuring The Infinity Tribe and Leon Trout is at Electric Haze; on March 30 Music Sunday at First Unitarian Church and a chamber concert by Sphinx Virtuosi at the College of the Holy Cross add to the weekend’s events.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WPI researchers received more than $1M from the National Science Foundation to design a flexible robotic arm for wheelchairs that lets users safely grasp, lift and carry objects out of reach. They plan to complete the project in four years and hope to bring the arm to market to better assist people.  Worcester Polytechnic Institute
  • WPI launched the Sustainable Career Mentorship Program in fall 2024 that paired 17 students with 25 green job professionals for twice-yearly meetings—organizers said the program boosts student skills for sustainability careers and helps them learn about opportunities in solving climate challenges. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A partial solar eclipse will occur March 29 across parts of the Northeast — Worcester residents without eclipse glasses can safely watch the event by using a colander to project the sun’s image, a DIY pinhole projector made from a box, or overlapping fingers to form pinholes. Experts emphasize that ordinary sunglasses or movie 3-D glasses will not block harmful ultraviolet rays.  Telegram & Gazette

  • During his Radio Worcester appearance Wednesday morning, Mayor Joseph Petty said he remains open-minded about establishing a civilian review board for police after residents called for more oversight following a damaging DOJ report—he also warned that while COVID trends are improving, residents should remain vigilant.  MassLive
  • The state Department of Revenue seized Boston Market at 14 Park Ave—after the restaurant sidestepped eviction amid a rent dispute that lasted over a year. Boston Market said it is working to resolve the matter and plans to reopen soon.  Telegram & Gazette
