COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Seana Weaver has taken over as CEO at Worcester County Food Bank on Route 9 in Shrewsbury. Weaver, who served as agency relations manager from 2018 to 2022, will strengthen the partner network amid federal aid cuts and rising food insecurity.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Residents can now apply for a plot in Worcester's new community garden at Green Hill Park on a first-come, first-served basis until April 3, and the garden features varied planting beds, accessible plots, storage, and other amenities as part of wider park improvements.  Telegram & Gazette

  • The Board of Health is reviewing changes to ease tobacco store spacing rules, while American Eagle will close its Devens center with 100 layoffs starting in April. Taino Restaurant has opened on Park Ave and Beacon Bank now runs 11 merged branches in Central Mass (per a Feb. 23 announcement).  Telegram & Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Worcester endured a harsh winter with 77 inches of snow (including 22.4 inches in one storm and 16.2 in a blizzard) and 18 days at or below freezing; NWS meteorologist Kevin Cadima said today may bring light snow or ice before a warmup from March 8 to 11.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Snowy owls visiting Worcester have drawn photographers who sometimes crowd too close + disturb the birds' rest, conservationists say. The pressure combined with climate change and other threats adds stress to these vulnerable birds.  Telegram & Gazette

SPORTS NEWS

  • After a March 1 win over Westfield State, Worcester State earned an automatic NCAA Division 3 bid + will face Mary Washington on March 6, while WPI received an at-large bid and will play Amherst, setting up the chance for an all-Worcester matchup in the tournament.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Worcester State men’s basketball clinched the MASCAC title on March 2 by defeating Westfield State with a late layup by Johnny Annan to advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Meanwhile, Clark women’s hoops fell to Smith in the NEWMAC final.  Telegram & Gazette
