  • The Worcester Police Department's new comfort dog, Sheruff Barkley, visited third graders at Tatnuck Magnet School Tuesday morning after students selected his name in a fall competition - the visit provided a warm moment for the school community.  7 News Boston

  • The upscale Vivienne Coastal Mediterranean (located at 446 Main St. near City Hall) will reopen in March after closing last September due to an electrical fire that caused smoke and water damage, as crews finish restoration in the Glass Tower.  Telegram & Gazette
  • Verizon confirmed a network outage on Wednesday that left customers, including some in our area, without voice and data services — engineers worked to fix the issue quickly while Downdetector logged over 1 million outage reports in 24 hours.  7 News Boston

  • Samara Tang-Rainwater, a freshman at Doherty Memorial, was named the city's youth poet laureate and began her two-year term on Jan. 1 + she gave her first poem reading on Jan. 2 during a ceremony with city officials.  Telegram & Gazette
  • The Worcester JCC presents the 19th International Jewish Film Festival starting Jan. 24 with a 7:30 p.m. screening of 'Eleanor the Great' at St. John's High School (Shrewsbury). The event will show diverse films at local venues, celebrating Jewish culture and history.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Bolton Flats Wildlife Management Area spans nearly 1,000 acres near Bolton, Harvard and Lancaster and offers a quiet winter walk for locals, with varied trails that can turn soft (proper footwear is needed) amid natural meadows and wetlands.  Telegram & Gazette

  • Local officials oppose a proposed 10-year tax incentive agreement that would save Menkiti Group $613,211 in taxes for its 48-apartment project in Worcester, & discussions about the plan continue.  Worcester Business Journal

  • Saint Vincent Hospital (a local healthcare fixture) has named an interim CEO on its website after posting a job opening late last year and will continue its search for a permanent leader.  Worcester Business Journal
  • UMass Chan scientists have nearly tripled the known regulatory switches in the human genome to 2.37 million (the study published in Nature offers a new tool to study gene regulation and its link to diseases). Researchers plan to use the map to explore noncoding DNA variations.  UMass Chan Medical School
