  • Jimmy Kang, a longtime club promoter, will take over Electric Haze operations in mid-Feb with plans to join current owners as a partner. The venue will diversify its events — adding a pizza slice window next door opening on Jan. 16.  Telegram & Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Worcester State University, Framingham State University and Fitchburg State University have received more than $4 million under the SUCCESS program to help at-risk college students with tutoring, transportation, child care and other services. The state allocated $13 million to support over 16,000 students across nine state universities.  Worcester Business Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • Littleton-based Hanscom Federal Credit Union has expanded onto Chesapeake Bay by acquiring The Peoples Bank, a Maryland credit union with seven branches on the Eastern Shore; the deal boosts Hanscom’s assets to about $2.1B and over 115,000 members while keeping all staff as Peoples Powered by Hanscom.  Worcester Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former councilor Dennis Irish, known for pushing the arena naming rights deal, died Jan. 9 at his Florida home, city officials said. He served four terms and was a longtime spokesman for Saint Vincent Hospital and the Worcester Housing Authority.  Telegram & Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rentschler Biopharma will produce VMX-C001 at its Milford facility to supply a Phase 3 clinical trial that starts early this year. The novel drug, developed by Netherlands-based VarmX, helps patients on blood thinners reduce severe bleeding during emergency surgeries.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Flu cases are rising in Worcester as UMass Memorial Health reported a 94% increase in cases since last October + experts urge vaccination to reduce severe illness. Mobile clinics at France's Barbershop and Akwabee Free Medical Program offer shots every second or third Thursday until April.  Telegram & Gazette
