  • Mourners gathered at the Uxbridge police station on Jan. 8 to offer condolences after Officer Stephen LaPorta died in a crash on Route 146 while assisting a motorist (icy conditions are under investigation).  Telegram & Gazette

  • Worcester insurer Fallon Health will be acquired by Somerville-based Mass General Brigham, creating the state's third-largest insurer ahead of Medicaid cuts. The deal is expected to boost competition + improve coverage options.  Worcester Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Quinsigamond Elementary was briefly evacuated yesterday after staff spotted smoke in a bathroom, and students and staff were safely back by 10 a.m. The school is investigating the incident — any responsible student may face disciplinary action.  Telegram & Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which has funded PBS and NPR for over 50 years, will close after federal funding cuts, possibly affecting local media in Massachusetts. Stations like GBH and WBUR say they will continue operating while seeking new funding sources.  Telegram & Gazette

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A New York-based firm has proposed a 19 story mixed use building with 125 apartments and first floor retail space on a vacant downtown lot. The application is under review by the Zoning Board of Appeals.  Worcester Business Journal
  • Bayberry Bowling Center in Spencer is back on the market as owner Joshua Sundberg seeks a buyer who will preserve its candlepin bowling tradition. The center will operate as usual plus install a new scoring system and update the arcade and pool hall.  Worcester Business Journal
